I was reading a book by Dr Frank Lipman called ‘Revive: End Exhaustion and Feel Great Again. It is a powerful book full of inspirational ideas that would surely cheer you up if you have the time to read this Monday morning.
Instead, I am going to suggest that you to take a slow deep breath and inhale all the goodness of life into your being and expel any tension or stiffness that may be residing in the muscles and tissues of your body. Tentatively, allow your mind to consider things you should to do but somehow never get round to. Then, instantly make a firm resolve to remove the word should from your vocabulary today.
As Dr Frank Lipman says ‘Don’t Should on yourself’ but rather ‘do something that you love instead’
Next, just for the moment think about what brings joy and laughter into your life. Keep it simple. Often the best things in life are free.
Here is a list of my favorite things, just to get you started:
- Sharing time with family and friends
- The sea especially on the wild and windy days
- Good conversation over a decent cup of coffee
- Singing and dancing with abandon
- Bubble baths with loads of bubbles
- Looking at daft and funny movie and laughing foolishly
- Joining in a spontaneous activity where everyone is out and about, just for the fun of it all
- This blog!!
Note to self
Writing out a list of joyful activities is a very interesting experiment. What I omitted and included surprised me. At your coffee break this morning take a few moments and jot down the first happy thought that comes into your head. I mean what about the Rugby Match last night? Anyway, try it out and see what makes you smile.
Doing this exercise helped me to remember a fundamental truth. Joy is more a state of ‘being’ than ‘having’.
My happiness is triggered by singing and dancing. Recently I have joined a choir and I love it! Thanks Norman and Carol for sharing your wonderful gift of music. Choirs suit me as I love being part of a ‘fun activity’ that brings out the best in its members. John S Powell is right when he says ‘Happiness is an Inside Job’
